History
"5 Esquinas” (5 Corners) is an area of Barrios Altos, in Lima, the capital of Peru. The area received its name in colonial times, due to the existence of a street intersection that formed five corners, hence the name “5 Esquinas”. During the 19th century, the traditional neighborhood of “5 Esquinas” became a favored meeting point for notable historical figures.
Its mansions bore witness to typical cultural manifestations and gatherings where people sang, danced, and enjoyed the traditional dishes of the ancient city of Lima. This emblematic place, declared a Cultural Heritage of the Nation, is where the great Peruvian composer Felipe Pinglo Alva was born and inspired Nobel Prize winner Mario Vargas Llosa to write his novel of the same name.
